Here are the results from last week's XC races:

HIGH SCHOOL

ACHS Cross Country raced in Poplar Forest Saturday, Oct. 5 at the “Runnin’ with the Wolves” cross country invitational in Forest, VA. The women’s cross country team started the morning off with two top tier 5K runs. Freshman Elly Nash took second place out of 76 runners, finishing in 20:25 and senior Madison Martin pushed over the finish line in 22:44 for 15th. Both women earned medals for their efforts. The Pacers won the women’s race followed by Charlottesville (2nd) and Mecklenburg County (3rd). Appomattox didn’t have a full women’s crew for a team score.   

In the men’s 5k that followed, juniors Clay Hamilton and Christian Goodman paced one another finishing in 26th and 31st respectively. Hamilton crossed the line in 18:45 and Goodman came through in 18:59. Less than 40 seconds later freshman Lucas Hunter cruised into the finish chute for 42nd in 19:38. The Pacers won the men’s race followed by Charlottesville (2nd) and Mecklenburg County (3rd). The Appomattox men didn’t have a full squad for a team score. 

Earlier in the week the teams traveled to Naruna to compete at William Campbell on Oct. 2. The men’s varsity team took third with 89 points behind Galileo (33) and Altavista (80). Clay Hamilton and Christian Goodman paced one another, finishing within one second of each other. Hamilton finished in 18:00 for 2nd and Goodman finished in 18:01 for 3rd. Lucas Hamilton followed in 13th place (19:36), David Owen in 36th (22:48), and Matthew Thomas in 48th (23:50). 

The women’s team was led by senior Madison Martin, who won the race in 21:23. Juniors Julie Goodman (16th) and Bella Perry (35th) followed in 26:07 and 31:27 respectively. The high school team competes again on Oct. 9 in Nelson County. 

MIDDLE SCHOOL

AMS Cross Country raced in Poplar Forest Saturday, Oct. 5 at the “Runnin’ with the Wolves” cross country invitational in Forest, VA. The middle school boys team placed 5th in the 4K, behind the Pacers (1st), Hidden Valley (2nd), Forest Middle (3rd) and James River Day School (4th). Seventh graders Ryder Hamilton (13:34) and Silas Hamilton (14:12) led the boy’s team over the hilly Poplar Forest course finishing in 6th and 14th respectively. Sam Detwiler was the third Raider to come across the finish line in 17:10 for 44th. Sixth graders Luke Dalton (19:35) and John Hampton (19:36) worked together to cross the line in 69th and 70 respectively.

In the final race of the day Saturday, sixth grader Kady Nash led the girls team through the 4K in a time of 20:18 for 44th. Eighth graders Fayth Stough (22:16) and Alexia Cutlip (22:27) claimed 60th and 63rd respectively to finish out the squad. Pulaski won the meet followed by Forest Middle (2nd) and the Pacers (3rd). The girls didn’t have a full team for a team score.

Earlier in the week the teams traveled to Naruna to compete at William Campbell on Oct. 2. The Raiders middle school boys won their race with 47 points followed by Dan River with 53 for 2nd. The win came after Ryder Hamilton won the 4K in 14:42, Silas Hamilton took 2nd (15:10), Sam Detwiler took 16th (17:47), Levi Reynolds took 17th (17:51) and John Hampton took 24th (19:26). Beckham Glover completed the team coming in 36th (23:53). 

The middle school girls team won its 4K with a mere 17 points, ahead of Altavista and Chatham. Eighth graders Raegan Wells and Olivia Tucker and sixth grader Kady Nash set the pace for the team. Wells took 3rd (19:33) while Tucker came in 4th (19:52) and Nash earned 5th (20:33). Runners Elizabeth Hunter, Alexia Cutlip, Dixie Millner and Maggie Tilley-Hodges completed the team. Hunter took 8th (21:37), Cutlip 9th (21:41), Millner 26th (28:10) and Tilley-Hodges 27th (28:30). 

The middle school team competes again in Altavista on Oct. 16.
